Jarome Luai PNG Decision Will Impact The NRL On A Scale We May Have Never Seen Before

There is never a boring day in the rugby league world, and it seems like that excitement isn’t going anywhere after Tigers captain Jarome Luai announces that he will be signing with the Papua New Guinea Chiefs from 2028.

The star five-eighth has been leading the Tigers around the park for the past two seasons following his impressive stint with the Penrith Panthers, where he won a total of four premierships.

The news of the signing could not come at a better time for the NRL and their expansion clubs. Alongside the Chiefs, the Perth Bears will be introduced to the league in 2027, one year before the Papua New Guinean side.

The timing of this signing could not be better for the Chiefs as chatter began to swirl about the potential issues surrounding their club's recruitment and how management was going to be able to position the club as a desirable destination.

NRL journalist Michael Chammas was awarded the head job in PNG, which left pundits certainly scratching their heads about the readiness of the new manager. Despite this, Chammas has proved his worth with his first signing being the very popular Jarome Luai.

In addition to his skills as a rugby league player, Jarome Luai’s popularity and ability to draw in new players are definitely major factors in the signing. With former teammates Brian To’o and Isaiah Yeo both coming off contract at the end of 2027, Jarome could be a major factor in getting their deals over the line.

After the Tigers' impressive start to this season, many fans of the club would be naturally confused about the reasons behind the departure of their captain. With five wins from seven games, the team is looking impressive, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere.

Even with the success that the team is having in 2026, the opportunity to be a part of something bigger was ultimately the reason for Jarome’s departure. Despite the presence of a tax-free contract being on the table, Jarome made it clear to media that this was not the ultimate factor, explaining that ‘unless you get over there and experience it for yourself, you won’t really get it.'

This signing is just another twist in the saga that is the 2026 NRL season, and it certainly won’t be the last. With many more signings to come for both the Chiefs and Bears, the NRL world will be eagerly waiting to see what else might happen and how Luai’s new contract might start a chain reaction.
